Alfred B. Costa, 68, of 142 Cote Ave., a juvenile specialist with the Woonsocket Police Department for 26 years before retiring in 1979, died Tuesday at the Woonsocket Hospital. He was the husband of Germaine M. (Pelletier) Costa.

Born in Northborough, Mass., a son of the late Isabel (Monteiro) Costa-Andrade and his stepfather, the late Michael J. Andrade, he had lived in Woonsocket most of his life.

He was a member of Woonsocket KofC, the Fraternal Order of Police, Woonsocket Branch, RIARC, RING 109, The Italian Workingmens Club, St. Joseph's Veterans Association and the Woonsocket Milk Fund.

Mr. Costa also served as Officer Friendly for children of the Woonsocket School System. In 1968 he was named Citizen of the Year by the Woonsocket Kiwanis Club. He was moderator of the annual outing of the Woonsocket Junior Police and a member of the American Red Cross Woonsocket Branch Caravan of Cheer.

In March of 1980 the Woonsocket Council KofC named him Citizen of the Year. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Besides his wife he leaves three daughters, Patricia A. Costa and Carol Bernier, both of Woonsocket and Debra Coofer of Newport; five brothers, Antonio R. Costa of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Joaquin, John, Francis and Joseph Andrade, all of Woonsocket; two sisters, Mary Amado Jr. of Portsmouth and Rose Harris of Woonsocket; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 8:45 a.m. from the Egidio DiPardo & Sons Funeral Home, 75 Harris Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Charles Church, North Main Street. Burial will be in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham, Mass.
