John was born to Francis Cogswell and Elizabeth Rogers as the fifth of ten children. He is cited as one of the five remaining living children in his father's will dated Feb. 25, 1755.

He is listed in the catalog of US craftsman as a notable cabinetmaker in Boston from 1769-1789. He was also thought to have done work in New Hampshire, specializing in secretaries/ desks.

John married Abigail Gooding on Dec. 2 1762 in Boston. She was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Gooding of Boston. Abigail died on Jan. 19, 1782 at the age of 41.

He married Abiel Page on Apr. 10, 1782 in Boston. Abiel was the daughter of Edward Page and Rebecca Kilby of Boston. Abiel died "suddenly" on Feb. 12, 1804 at the age of 53.

John's third marriage was to Mary Cazneau on May 24, 1804 and he married a fourth time at the age of 72 to Mrs. Sarah Tuckerman on Jul. 18, 1811 in Boston.

There are no children living to an adult age born to John that are known to me. Abigail's gravestone inscription says "... also five of their children died young".

John was known to have held various town offices in Boston from 1778 to 1809.

He lived until 1818, passing away at the age of 79.

The Boston record of deaths and interments lists John and his last wife Sarah as buried in Copps Hill in lot 87, and Mary buried in lot 86. John's cause of death was listed as "old age". The listing in the "family" heading of this record book is "John Cogswell" which I believe has been misinterpreted by some as being his father.

Relating to cabinetmaking, John is mentioned in references:
