Delmas D. Burchfield, 89, of Stuarts Draft, Va., departed this life and was embraced by the loving arms of the Lord on January 11, 2016. Del was born on April 22, 1926 in Bryson City, N.C., the son of Ida Alice McMahon and Charles Ausborn Burchfield, the ninth of eleven children. His mother died when he was six years old, and he was raised by many different relatives.

After graduating from Central High School in High Point, N.C. in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January, 1942 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific during World War II in the First Marine Division in the battles on the islands of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu.

Del met his first wife, L. Katherine "Kaye" Roberson, who also served in the Marine Corps, at Cherry Point, N.C. They were married on February 2, 1946, and were married for 53 years until her death in 1999.

Del earned an engineering degree from Pittsburgh Technical Institute, and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Upper Iowa University. During his career, he served as an engineer on NASA's Mercury and Gemini space programs, and worked with the original seven astronauts as the programs were developed. He served as a civilian in the Department of the Army and the Department of Defense as a Quality Assurance engineer in the Pentagon. He was a Fellow with the American Society for Quality Control.Del's faith as a Christian was central to his life.

He was a member of Rodes United Methodist Church, and in recent years also attended Mountain View Full Gospel Church in Afton, Va. For many years he served as a lay minister in the UMC. Del was a 32nd degree Mason, being a life member of the Genessee 174 lodge in Flint, Mich.

Del was so blessed to marry his second wife, Margaret Sullivan Burchfield, on May 20, 2000. She has provided him with steadfast love, and faithful care during recent years as his illness progressed. Her family became his family. The pillars of Del's life were his faith, his family, and his country.

Del was preceded in death by his first wife, L. Katherine Burchfield; sisters, Maude, Ella, Nellie, and Josie; and brothers, Reggie, Paul, Charlie, Buel, and Willie.

Del is survived by his wife of 16 years, Margaret Sullivan Burchfield of Stuarts Draft, Va.; daughter, Linda Kaye Burchfield of Bridgewater, Va.; son, David W. Burchfield and wife, Bonnie of Bridgewater, Va.; granddaughters, Sarah, Rachel, and Laura Burchfield of Bridgewater, Va.; brother, Revis Burchfield of Trinity, N.C.; and sister, Mary Ann Grogg of Kingsport, Tenn. He is also survived by his wife Margaret's family, son, Ulysse Sullivan and wife, Freda of Afton, Va.; granddaughter, Tiffany Buckley and husband, T.C. and their children, Khloe and Lily of Afton, Va.; grandson, Steven Sullivan and wife, Carrie and their children, Tyler, Nathan, and Matthew of Avon, Va.;and numerous other friends and relatives.A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., with the Rev. Scott Jewell officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Augusta Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Augusta Health Foundation, c/o Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O.
