Infant son and first child of Samuel John Layton and his 1st wife, Mary Ellen Naylor.

Mary Ellen and Samuel were married 24 August 1874 in the LDS Endowment House at Salt Lake City, SL, Utah.

After the death of their infant son, they had a daughter, Mary Lavinnia, born 23 March 1876 at Salt Lake City.

Samuel subsequently married Sarah Ann Trappett in the Endowment House on 13 November 1879. It is not clear if he was a polygamist, or if he and Mary Ellen Naylor had parted. She is shown on the 1880 Census as "Mary E. Naylor" a "25 year old widow", living with her daughter, "Mary L. Naylor" and a brother David Naylor. She had evidently retaken her maiden name.

This "widow" entry is not explained, unless she had married a second time and became widowed, as Samuel John Layton did not die until 1944, in Canada.

In any event, she had not married again until about 1886/87 to Joseph Tate, by whom she had one known son, Joseph Thompson Tate, 23 April 1887-21 July 1888. He lived only 10 months.

Mary Ellen Naylor Tate had died five months prior to this last son's death.
