Melvin J. Bowen, age 91, of Anderson, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016 at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born on April 5 1924, in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Oscar Lee Bowen and the late Claudia Osborne Bowen.
He was a graduate of Anderson Boys High School. Mr. Bowen was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army and Veteran of World War II. He served under General MacArthur in the South West Pacific Theatre including the Philippine Liberation. He retired from Woodword Stephens Electric Repair Inc. as shop foreman after 49 years of service. He was an electric motor repairman, machinist, and a combination welder.
He is survived by his loving wife, Evie Jane Richey Bowen, of 61 years; a son, Stephen Bowen; a daughter, Dr. Melvya Jane Tollison and her husband, Lemar Tollison; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara McClellan, and Helen Rapella and her husband Jim.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 14, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home.
The Graveside Service will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Reverend Dr. Johnny F. McKinney officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boulevard Baptist Church, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621, or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
