Paul is survived by his wife Kelly of Union City, 2 daughters Morgan Nicole and Jasmine Alta, one son Kaden Paul all at home, his mother Carolyn Smeltzer of Union City, 2 sisters Susan R. Lepper of Union City and Catherine A. Smeltzer of Ypsilanti, 1 brother Keith A. Smeltzer of Union City, 2 nieces and one nephew; 1 grand niece, 1 grand nephew, 1 great grand niece
He was predeceased by his father Archie. Paul was an elementary school teacher in Union City for 31 years. He also coached wrestling for 25 years. He was twice Regional Wrestling Coach of the Year, Big 8 Coach of the Year, coached several conference champs, one state champ, and several state placers. He coached the 1996 Final Four Champs, the 1997 state runners up and was well known in high school wrestling circles. He belonged to the Michigan Wrestling Assoc. and was active in many school functions. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of the Ottawa – Chippewa Indians, an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He belonged to the NWTF and loved being up north in the woods. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City. Services will be Thursday 4:00 PM September 7, 2006 at the Union City High School with Reverend Karen Nachtigall officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Union City Wrestling Club.
