Paul Horn was born on February 5, 1946 in Huntington, West Virginia to William and June Bjork Horn. As a pastor’s son, Paul grew up in Proctorville, OH, Trade Lake, WI, Duluth, MN and Willmar, MN where he graduated from high school in 1964. He then attended Bethel College graduating in 1968.

At Bethel, he met Judith Glewwe and they were married on June 13, 1969.

He attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL and Bethel Seminary in St Paul, MN from 1968 to 1973. Motivated by his faith, Paul pursued a career in social work. In 1973 they moved to Currie when he accepted a social work position at Region 8 North Welfare. After experiencing several blizzards that made roads impassable, they relocated to Slayton in 1976 and settled in for the next 40 years.

Paul completed his Masters in Social Work from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1982. As Supervisor of Child Welfare Services, Paul remained at Lincoln, Lyon, and Murray Human Services until his retirement in 2004. Paul loved his work and cared deeply about the children he served and the employees he supervised.

After a short retirement, Paul went back to work in 2006 with Southwestern Mental Health Center in Worthington, MN. He held the position of Supportive Housing Coordinator, assisting homeless individuals with services, until his passing.

Paul and Judy raised their four children in Slayton where he was actively engaged in the lives of his family, church, and community. Paul was a family man and took great pleasure in his children and their activities and accomplishments. Whether it was football, honor roll, basketball, drama, or math team, he was always supportive.

For Paul, the highlight of each year was the annual Horn family camping trip. Paul would spend hours pouring over maps and AAA books to plan out the perfect trip for his family. Inevitably, these annual trips included long distance car rides to obscure historical sites and national parks, multiple coffee stops, and miscellaneous car malfunctions. As the years passed, Paul was so pleased to share this tradition with his extended family and much-loved grandchildren. Paul’s enthusiasm for scouting was rekindled when his sons became old enough to join Troop 25 which led to a long term and meaningful commitment to the Boy Scouts of America. Paul was a member of Lake Sarah Baptist Church where he was thoroughly involved in church life. Over the years, Paul served on many different church committees and particularly enjoyed working with the children’s ministry and youth groups. He valued his church community and pastor so much.

Finally, Paul believed strongly in civic engagement and volunteerism. Over the years, Paul took great pleasure in serving the community through the Murray County Food Shelf, Kiwanis Club and K Club, Murray County Parks Board, and DFL party.

When he was not involved in work or other civic activities, Paul enjoyed reading, drinking coffee, tinkering with old stuff, cheering for the Twins or Vikings, woodworking, drinking more coffee, planning extravagant cardboard structures, and reminiscing about old Boundary Waters camping trips.

Paul passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at the age of 69.

His legacy will live on in the lives of those he has touched. Blessed be his memory.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Judy Horn; four dearly loved children and their spouses, Sarah and Kojoe Otto, Abigail and Justin Bosma, Peter and Megan Horn, and Matthew and Kim Horn. He also leaves behind seven adored grandchildren (soon to be eight in March), Elisa and Abram Otto, Thomas and Anna Bosma, and Noah , Emme, and Mary Horn.
