James S. Frazer married Mary Washington, who was of relation to George Washington, on May 8, 1878. The couple had seven children together, James Stokes Frazer Jr, Henry Shelby Frazer, George A. Frazer, Lawrence Smith Frazer, Mary Washington Frazer, Elizabeth Murfree Frazer, & Joseph Washington Frazer.

James Frazer was a lawyer, who was educated at Cumberland University Law School. He would be elected to the state legislature not long after he began practicing law. His law firm partner, J.M. Dickinson, would later become the Secretary Of War under President William Howard Taft.
Frazer was also an attorney for the Louisville-Nashville
Railroad.

James Stokes Frazer died at just 39 years old, just a month after his son, Joseph W. Frazer, was born.
