William Harvey Ballenger, 87 of New Bern, passed away at his home on January 11, 2016, surrounded by his family.

William is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Laura Ballenger, and his son Robert Lee Ballenger.

He is survived by his daughter Deborah Anne Ballenger Bowden and her husband Graham B. Bowden of Jacksonville, NC, and son, William Michael Ballenger and his wife Mary Ann Ballenger of Midlothian, VA, four grandchildren; Alfred Scott Houston of Pamlico County, NC, Jennifer Michelle Ballenger of New Bern, Christopher Robin Ballenger and wife Sarah of Mississippi, and William Edward Ballenger, and two great grandchildren; Arake and Ashley Ballenger.

William Ballenger was a graduate of New Bern High School, served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy, and retired after 36 years of civil service at MCAS Cherry Point as a Materials Management Director. He was a member of First Baptist Church of New Bern, where he served as a deacon and grounds superintendent. He was involved in many local civic organization, including; Masonic Doric Lodge A.F & A.M., York Rite Bodies, Sudan Shriners (Sudan Patrol Past Captain,) New Bern Shrine Club (Past President,) BPO Elks Lodge 764, American Legion Post 24, Boy Scouts (Scout Master 6 years.) William also served the New Bern community as the chairman of the Union Point Park "Put Your Mark on the Park" project, Alderman for the 6th ward for twelve years, as well as Mayor "pro tem."

Visitation for William will be from 6-8 pm Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Cotten Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at Sherwood Forest FWB Church on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 1pm. Entombment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Williams honor to The Shiners Childrens Hospital: Office of Development Shriners Hospitals for Children , 2900 Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, FL 33607.
