James, 82, Van Wert, died at 4:38 p.m., at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was the son of C. Meredith and Reba (Miller) Hayes. He married Alice J. Driver, who survives in Van Wert.
Also surviving are two sons: Mitchell D., Celina, and Eric D. (Janeen), Beaverdam, WI; two daughters: Melinda Hayes, Tucson, AZ, and Beth A. (Donald) Reiger, Stow; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter,, Deborah Hayes; and a sister, Janice Bishop.
A design engineer who retired from Phillips, Ft. Wayne, IN, in 1990 after 30 years of service, he also was a farmer for most of his life. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church and Elks Lodge 1197, both Van Wert, and graduated from Neptune High School.
Funeral services will be at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home and Crematory, Van Wert, with the Rev. Clark Williman officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.
