Herbert Dee Brooks was born July 6, 1925 to the late William Elza Brooks and Mattie McFarland Brooks in Windsor, Missouri. He died October 21, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 96.

Herbert is preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary Chastain Brooks; brothers Eldon and Franklin Brooks; sisters Rilletta Cooper and Thelma Bjolstad; son Mark Brooks; and grandson Eric Boyd.

Herbert lived his early life in Windsor Missouri. At age 18 he joined the Merchant Marines to fight in WWII where he hauled fuel and oil for fleets in war areas. He served about 4 ½ years prior to discharge. After his return he married Mary Catherine Chastain, the love of his life, in 1946 and they lived in Kansas City. He built a home where he continued to reside until his death. That union produced three children: Vicki Boyd, Mark Brooks (now deceased) and Carolyn Brooks.

Herbert's career was in excavation. Ultimately he owned his own business, Herbert Brooks Excavation with Mary serving as bookkeeper. He loved hunting and fishing and also built a cabin on family land at Truman Lake. Many wonderful times were held there with family and friends around the campfire. He also loved woodworking, making jewelry, and astronomy.

Herbert was a devout Christian. He was not big on words but demonstrated his love by his deeds. He was a Deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and all around fix-anything guy to anyone at church or in the neighborhood.

Surviving are: Vicki Boyd, Carolyn Brooks (Tim Falk), daughter-in-law Jean Brooks; Grandchildren Jeff Brooks (Jennifer), Jennifer Brooks-Stotts (Adam), Katy Daugherty (Luke), Brendan Falk, Molly Falk, and Sean Falk; and Great Grandchildren: Aidan and Ella Brooks, Tristan and Brooke Daugherty, Hendrix Stotts, and Briar Kurlak.
