WATERBURY — Mr. Samuel Davis Jr., 80, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband, for 57 years, of Helen M. (Payne) Davis.
Mr. Davis was born Nov. 21, 1935, in Waterbury, living on Abbott Avenue, son of the late Samuel Davis Sr. and the late Mamie (Blash) Davis.
He was a 1956 graduate of Leavenworth High School where he played football, basketball and golf, was retired from Southbury Training School, and also formerly worked at Riley and Burns Pharmacy.
After his retirement he worked as a Senior Companion and an AIC counsel. He was an active member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church in Waterbury where he was a member of the Steward Board, board of trustees, a Sunday school teacher, member of the Mass Choir, serving under Rev. Bonner, Rev. Perry and Rev. Blue. He was a former member of the Pearl Street Neighborhood Association, Golfing Club and received the Men of Distinction Award as well as many other personal awards. He was an avid sports fan, justice of the peace, loved cowboy movies and dabbled in photography.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Davis is survived by a son, Vincent A.of Waterbury; two granddaughters, Chyna L. and Davinity, both of Waterbury; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Lilliebell Collins, Elizabeth James and Geneva Whitbee Harrison, and four brothers, William Davis, John Davis, Walter Davis and George Davis.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, at Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, 82-100 Pearl St., Waterbury. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours will be held at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church during these hours.
Mr. Davis' family has chosen the Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect to handle his funeral arrangements.
