FRANKLIN — Gwendolyn Epstein Moorehouse, 97, of Franklin, passed away Dec. 29.

She was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Toronto, Canada

Lyn, as she was known to her friends, was the longtime director of Volunteer Services and Public Relations at Greene Valley Developmental Center. She spent her career promoting the good works of Greene Valley through community volunteers and fund-raising.

She was awarded State Employee of the Year, by then-governor Lamar Alexander.

She also found time to be president of the Parent-Teacher Association at both EastView Elementary School and Greeneville Junior High School, a board member of High School Band Boosters, Friends of Tusculum College, Cub Scout den mother and a master of ceremonies for the occasional local beauty pageant.

Lyn started her career with IBM in Canada. She later moved to New York City and found work in the fashion industry with Christian Dior. She worked under head designer Yves Saint Laurent.

She moved to Greeneville with her husband, Irving Epstein, who was a vice president at Magnavox in the late 1950s.

Her last years were spent in Nashville to be close to family.

Lyn’s passion was British sport cars and American muscle cars - primarily Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds, MGs and Triumphs. She preferred 400 and 429 cubic inches under the hood and liked a Hurst 4-speed over an automatic.

Luckily she was on a first-name basis with most of the state troopers in the area.

She was preceded in death by husbands: Irving Epstein. who died in 1969. and Glen Moorehouse, who died in 2005.

She is survived by two sons: Adam Epstein and his wife, Debbie, and David Epstein and his wife, Carmen; grandchildren: Christina, Jamie and Everett; great-grandchildren: Lauren, James, Mia and Juliette; and a great-great-grandson: Peyton.

A celebration of Lyn’s life will be held at 10 a.m. today at Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

A burial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in GreeneLawn Memory Garden in Greeneville.

Condolences can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Adam Epstein, 3704 Hobbs Road, Nashville, TN 37215

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Daystar Counseling Ministries, Inc., 2801 Azalea Place, Nashville, TN 37204.
