Born June 28, 1928 in Burke County, he was the son of the late Wilson Monroe Powell and Sallie Killian Powell.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jewel Smith Powell; two brothers, Marvin and Roy Powell.
Mr. Powell was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict in Japan. He was a member of Dry Ponds Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a deacon. He served as Chaplain for the Sawmills Fire Department.
He retired from GE Electric as an engineer and he enjoyed farming and carpentry work.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Clontz Powell of the home; two sons, David Wayne Powell and wife Cheryl of Granite Falls, Jonathan Curtis Powell and wife Donna of Granite Falls; one daughter, Rhona Hall Montgomery and husband Bradford of King, N.C.; three sisters, Pauline P. Austin, Louise P. Morgan, and Mary P. Gantt; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren and special caregiver Myronia Greene.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2016, 4:00 p.m. at Dry Ponds Baptist Church with Rev. Rob Evans, Dr. Rick Crouse, and Rev. Josh Dellinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Dry Ponds Baptist Church Cemetery.
