Roman "Buster" Kugle, age 82, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at St. Mary's Next Step Felician Village in Manitowoc surrounded by family and his special friend, Mark Jens.

Roman was born on April 7, 1928, in Manitowoc county to the late Frank and Emily (Konop) Kugle. He was a graduate of Reedsville High School in 1946. On Oct. 27, 1951, he married Audrey (Lippert) Kugle at St. Mary's Catholic church in Reedsville. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and trained as a medic. While in the Navy, he played baseball and basketball at Great Lakes, Ill., San Diego, Calif., and Corpus Christi, Texas. After his honorable discharge in 1948, he returned to Reedsville where he was employed by the Reedsville Cooperative Furniture Store and Funeral Home until 1950 when he was recalled to active duty and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital as a medic in Corpus Christi, Texas. Following his service there, he and Audrey returned to Reedsville to begin a family and resume his employment at the Reedville Cooperative for the next 38 years.

In 1981, he opened and operated Kugle's Kitchen for two years at which time he
sold the business and was hired by the Reedsville School District as head custodian
for the high school where he remained for six years. In 1988, Roman and Audrey
moved to Manitowoc where Roman was employed by the Jens Family Funeral Home until 2007 when health problems forced him to retire at age 78.

Roman had many accomplishments in his lifetime. He played on baseball teams in the
Manitowoc County and Eastern Wisconsin leagues, starting as a first baseman or
catcher. He was especially proud of the fact he started the youth basketball program
at St. Mary's School in Reedsville and coached the St. Mary's Cougars for 11 years
in the Manitowoc County Catholic League. He was also a member of the 1946 Reedsville
High School State championship basketball team and was a first team all-state guard.
He was a charter member of the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted
into the Hall of Fame in 1984. Roman served as a trustee and president for the
village of Reedsville, served on the Reedsville School Board and was a former member
of the Reedsville Sportsmen Club. He was also past president of both the Reedsville
Lions and the Manitowoc Lions clubs.

During his younger years, Roman enjoyed spending time fishing and boating with his
family at the family cottage in Little Sturgeon. He also enjoyed spending time with
his deer-hunting buddies at "Rustic Acres," their cabin in Pembine.
