Mary came into this world Nov. 12, 1922, in Durant, and left this world on Dec. 1, 2011, at Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

She was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. She taught school for 35 years, starting her career in Springdale in 1944. She was instrumental in starting one of the first special education programs in the state, located in Washington, Iowa, where she taught special education until retirement in 1979.

In Oskaloosa, she was an advisor in establishing the YWCA preschool and was also active in elder affairs.

She is survived by her husband, Perry H. Murry, daughter, Lana Brice Murry and husband Tim, her son, Michael P.
Brice and wife Nancy, grandchildren, Leesa Barnett and husband Eric, of Charlotte, N.C., Matthew S. Brice and wife Tracy, of College Station, Texas, and Daniel Johnston Brice and wife Summer, of Oskaloosa. She has five great­grandchildren, Dane and Gianna Barnett, of Charlotte, N.C., Caden and Caley Brice, of College Station, Texas, and Gemma Brice, of Oskaloosa.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Ruth Lee Johnston, her first husband, William H. Brice, brothers Paul Johnston and Lee Johnston, and a grandson, Perry Ryan Murry.

There will be a graveside service for family and close friends at Forrest Cemetery in Oskaloosa on Dec. 6 at 10 a.m.
