Kathryn Elizabeth Fertig Higgins passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at her home in Ridgely, Maryland. She was 96.
She was born on October 5, 1919, in Cass, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Andrew Fertig and Grace McLaughlin.
She was educated in the public schools in Hartford County, Maryland. She later graduated from Western Maryland College and earned her Bachelor’s degree in teaching. She taught home economics for many years in Caroline County.
She was married on June 12, 1944 to Leolin Higgins. He preceded her in death on September 28, 1967.
She travelled many times around the world, and enjoyed attending school reunions visiting with former students and staff from her lifelong career in teaching. An avid sports fan, she followed the Colts and the Baltimore Ravens. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by a nephew, William H. Hayes, Jr., and his wife Linda of Edgewood, MD; a niece Brenda K. Blackburn of Joppa, MD; and a nephew Hugh V. Hayes and his wife Carol of Joppa, MD; a sister, Martha L. Townsley of Upperco, MD, and a host of other nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Marvin Fertig and Lucile Hayes.
At her request, there will be no service.
