Doris Louise was born September 18, 1925, in West Palm Beach Florida to Birdie and Eston Sherman. She was the oldest of her two sibling; Eston Jr. and Dorothy. Because of her Dad's love for the beautiful mountains of Colorado, and a doctor's recommendation that Doris move to a less pollinated environment, she chose to attend college at the University of Denver, where she graduated in 1948. Unfortunately, her father, Eston, died in a Denver hospital of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever while visiting Colorado in October of 1965.

Doris worked as a secretary for Wilson Packing Co. in Denver, where she met Gerald Preuss, who in August of 1950 was sent to the Denver Wilson office on company business.

They began a whirlwind courtship, and on October 15, 1950, they were wed at the Pearl Memorial Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. For several years, they lived in Omaha, but eventually moved to Colorado because of her love of the beautiful mountains. They settled in Golden, and joined the Applewood Valley United Methodist Church. Then they adopted daughter, Jeri Lynne, in 1959, and devoted the next years of their life to raising her and experiencing all the joys of parenthood. Because of Jeri Lynne's interest in horses, they built a home in the mountains near Pine Jct., to have a place for their horses, April and her colt Bambi. Special events that happened during the years in the mountains were; Doris, a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, was selected Chapter Queen of the Yellow Rose Ball in 1975. Jeri Lynne graduated from Evergreen High School in 1976 and during her time in Evergreen, she served as Queen of her Job's Daughters Bethel. She was inspired to take up the nursing profession because of the wonderful care given to her Mom after Doris suffered a heart attack not long after they had moved to the mountains. Both Jeri Lynne and Doris volunteered at St. Anthony' s Hospital in the mid 70' s. One of the high points of their family was Jeri Lynne's capping ceremony in February of 1978. The lowest valley they had to endure was when Jeri Lynne was brutally murdered in Denver on February 14, 1980. Gerald and Doris never fully recovered, but somehow found the will to go on with their lives together.

Doris was an accomplished seamstress, bridge player and enjoyed traveling and taking photos of their many trips. Gerald and Doris were ardent cat lovers and took them on travels when they had an RV. One of their great pleasures was traveling in their motor home throughout the United States with Sam's Club. On one of their trips, they were in Duluth, Minnesota. where their cat Tiffany happened to get out, and they were unable to find her before it was time to leave. Miraculously nearly six months later, they received a phone call from the owner of a grain company near where they had parked. When they determined it was in fact Tiffany who the gentleman found, he flew her to Denver in his private plane for the reunion.

On a visit to Gerald's son in Tucson, Arizona, Doris enjoyed one of the most interesting evenings, as Bill had a telescope, and they looked at the stars well into the morning. She had studied astronomy in college and could identify many constellations.

Mostly because of Gerald's declining health, in 2006 they moved to the Courtyard independent living facility in Lakewood. Gerald passed away on January 13, 2007, and Doris continued to live at the Courtyard, where she was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed socializing with the other ladies at the Courtyard. Doris maintained variety of interests, such as sewing, crafting of all sorts, and playing bridge. She still was caring for their three cats, Bejon, Christie and Jack. Sister Dottie always kept close to Doris especially as she had the medical power of attorney for Doris. Doris's health declined greatly in January of 2009, and before her sister could approve a move to an assisted living facility, Doris died while at a nursing home.
