Funeral services for Leona E. Heckman of Dexter were held Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dexter. Mrs. Heckman died Saturday, Nov. 30, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines following a stroke at the age of 92.

Officiating at the service was Rev. Dr. Ray Martin, and Audrey Wells was the organist. David D. Kuhn sang "Scattering Precious Seed," and David Kuhn and Audrey Wells sang a duet, "Softly & Tenderly." The congregational hymn was "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder."

Pallbearers were Carroll Kopaska, Bill Kopaska, Colleen Blackford, Karen Costanzo, Raymond Shelley, Steven Shelley, David Shelley, Leonard Shelley, Lorre Jones, Dwayne Heckman, Timothy Heckman, Andrew Heckman, Matthew Heckman, Phillip Heckman, and Rachel Heckman. Burial was at the Dexter Cemetery, and arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Home.

Leona Elizabeth (Shaefer) Heckman was born Dec. 8, 1909, at the family farm in Audubon County, Iowa, to Elmer E. and Martha F. (Krause) Shaefer.

Leona graduated from Adair High School and taught country school in that area, later attending Capital City Commercial School in Des Moines. On Aug. 12, 1931, Leona and Gerald Heckman were united in marriage. There were blessed with four children, Dorothy, Vera, Errol, and Glenn.

Leona helped her husband farm in Cass, Adair, Dallas and Madison Counties and also worked as a dietitian at the Dexter Hospital. Leona was a dedicated and loving homemaker who cared for her husband and children and loved spending time with her family. She loved to raise chickens, many of them exotic species. Leona became active with plays at Union #5 and later with the Apple Tree Players in Winterset. She also completed the Dale Carnegie Course.

Leona leaves the following family to celebrate her life: children Dorothy Kopaska and husband Earnie of Dexter; Vera Shelley and husband Dean of Menlo, Erroll Heckman and wife Elaine of Dexter, and son Glenn Heckman and wife Kathy of Osceola; sister Janette Walker of San Antonio, Texas; brother Ray Shaefer and wife Josephine of Cannon City, Col.' 15 grandchildren; 19 great-g grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; 10 step- greatgrandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband Gerald in 1994, her parents, brothers Leonard, Lester and Clarence Shaefer, one great-grandchild Benjamin Shelley, and one step-great-great-grandchild.
