Mary Katherine Walter, daughter of Frederich and Delia (Leibfort) Walter, was born July 10, 1920, at the family farm near Shenandoah, Iowa. She attended the Summit School near the farm and later obtained her GED in 1967. Mary was united in marriage with Herbert Patience on Oct. 31, 1943, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Northboro, Iowa. Three children were born to this union.
Mary was primarily a mother and farm wife, but also worked outside the home as a health aide. She helped on the farm for over 49 years. Mary was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter and taught Sunday school for many years.
She was a member of the Ladies Aide, the Blue Birds, a 4-H leader and a volunteer at the Madison County Extension Office. She was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 8142. Mary enjoyed refinishing furniture, chair caning, quilting and sewing clothes. Above all else, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished the time she was able to spend with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert Patience in 1992; sister, Alvene (Walter) Eitzen; and brother, Robert Walter.
