Trenton -- Eugenia (Jean) E. LaBelle, 84 died after a long illness on January 4, 2016, at MDI Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine. She was born September 27, 1931 in Moose River, Maine, the daughter of Charles P. and Mae T. (Hall) Lumbert.
Jean graduated from Jackman High School, Valedictorian of her class. She played on the girls’ basketball team during her high school years. She worked at the First National Grocery Store in Ellsworth, until she redirected her career to work for Hancock County. She started working in Superior Court, then in June 1973 she became County Clerk, from which she retired on June 30th, 1994. For many years she was an instrumental member of the Trenton Baptist Church, and in the 1980’s the church was closed for several years, but she felt the Town needed a church for the town’s people to worship in. Along with her daughter they worked together with area churches and The Maine Baptist Association to reopen the Trenton Baptist Church.
The most important things to Jean were her husband (Arthur) of 63 years, family, friends and church. She loved to cook and was always having friends and family in for meals and good times. There were always homemade cookies or sweets on the counter for all to enjoy. If there was someone in need or something to be done she was there. She always had a kind word and saw the good in people. She loved decorating for holidays and stamping and making cards. Friends and family so enjoyed and looked forward to receiving the beautiful cards she made marking a special occasion. She also loved flowers, gardening and spent many hours on her houseplants and outside flowers during the warmer months. She truly enjoyed her sunroom at home where she could do her stamping and card making while watching the birds, chipmunks, squirrels and of course her husband working around the yard. She was always excited to see that stray Cardinal or Baltimore oriole and one winter even Turkeys. She and Arthur enjoyed traveling and visited many places including the Panama Canal, Jamaica, Bermuda, Canada via the Trans Canada Railway, Alaska, Hawaii, Newfoundland, several cruises and many other places in the United States. She also loved to go to camp on Second Lake Old Stream in Wesley, Maine where she enjoyed watching the loons, eagles, fishing, hunting and spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed being outside, snowmobiling with friends and cross country skiing with her grandchildren. Jean also enjoyed knitting. Her children and grandchildren were always excited to receive their new double knit mittens every year for Christmas.
Jean is survived by her husband William Arthur LaBelle, Sr.; her children, sons Lanier D. Lumbert of Portland; William (Bill) A. LaBelle, Jr. of Mariaville, and partner Shasta Newenham; daughter Cheryle LaBelle Monson and husband Douglas Monson, Sr. of Trenton; two grandchildren Douglas W. Monson, Jr. and wife Melissa of Brockton, MA.; Brandie Monson Rubin and husband Clifford of Scarborough; five great grandchildren Andrew, Emma and Samuel Monson of Brockton, MA; Abigail and Lillian Rubin of Scarborough; and Shasta’s daughter Reese. She is survived by one brother Charles (Perry) Lumbert of Jackman and many nieces and nephews and friends. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 1:00pm at the Trenton Baptist Church, route 3 in Trenton. Interment will be at Leland Cemetery in Trenton in the spring.
