James F. Gaither was the eldest son of Dr. John B. Gaither and Mary Elizabeth "McCubbins" Gaither. He was the brother of W.E. Gaither of Cameron and Rockdale.

He came to Texas in 1903 and was the manager of the MISTROT BROS. & Co. in Rockdale. From 1995 until his retirement he was a traveling salesman, representing the Quaker Oats Company of St. Joseph, Missouri, in Texas and Oklahoma. For a number of years after accepting the traveling job the family lived in Waco, except for the last 30 years he had lived in Fort Worth. At the time of his death his home was at 2221 Harrison Street in Fort Worth.

Mr. Gaither was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Helen Walton Bruton Gaither, and daughter, Helen Gruiton Gaither. Surviving are one son, Lt. James F. Gaither, Jr., who is stationed with the United States Army Signal Photo Company, No. 166, at Camp Crowder, Missouri; a sister, Mrs. M. G. Robinson and niece, Mary Graham Robinson of Charlotte, North Carolina; a brother Jack Clay Gaither, Jr., of Fort Worth, W. E. Gaither of Cameron; a nephew, two nieces, Mary & Ann Gaither of Fort Worth.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec 23, 1943, from the Harveson & Cole Funeral Chapel in Fort Worth, with interment in Mission Burial Park in San Antonio that afternoon.

The body was interred by the side of his wife and daughter.
