Marine PFC Frederick O'Dell Schoeppel, son of Frederick and Goldie (Mudd) Schoeppel, perished on Vanugu Island in the Solomon Islands during World War II.

A letter from Lt. Col. James Roosevelt, son of President Roosevelt, to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Schoeppel, 732 North Fourteenth Street, East St. Louis, told them that their son, Pvt. Frederick Schoeppel Jr., 22, who was killed in action last July [1, 1943] while a member of a Marine Raider unit, is believed to be buried on New Georgia Island. Col. Roosevelt's letter contained a picture of the grave, which had been given him by a member of the unit who did not state specifically whether it was taken in New Georgia.

His family had this memorial marker placed at Lake View Memorial Gardens, in Fairview Heights, Illinois, in hopes that O'Dell would one day be found and returned home.

Left to mourn his passing were O'Dell's parents and baby sister, Eileen.

PFC Schoeppel's name can also be found among the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines (56780330).
