Several Great Northern employees who were killed in the worst railroad disaster in American history, are buried in Evergreen Cemetery. The Wellington Avalanche disaster occurred at the summit of the Cascade Mountains and claimed 96 lives on March 1, 1910. Lewis George Walker (1856-1910) was an African-American cook and steward to Great Northern Railway Division Superintendent James H O'Neill.
