John Gray of Mount Vernon, Virginia
The first documented Gray in the United States was John Gray, whom one affectionately calls "Old John Gray." John Gray was born near Mount Vernon, Virginia on January 6, 1764. Upon his death on March 29, 1868, Gray was the next to last surviving member of the army which General Washington had led throughout the Revolution. He was certainly the oldest surviving Revolutionary War veteran from the State of Ohio.

After his father was killed at the Battle of White Plains, New York, John enlisted in the Continental Army (Virginia Line) at the age of seventeen and served in Captain Sanford's militia company.
(Marietta County News, Tuesday, May 29, 1866, states that his father's name was Shadrick Gray.)

Our Gray family descended from the marital union of John Gray and his first wife, Nancy.

William Gray of Cuyahoga County, Ohio
William Gray, son of John Gray of Mount Vernon, Virginia, and Nancy Dowell, was born in 1787 or 1788 in Jamestown, Surry Co., Virginia. William and his brother Thomas emigrated to Euclid, Cuyahoga County between 1808-1810 with the family of David Dille.

He was married in Euclid, to Miss Clarissa Porter, who was born in New Hampshire, and was a young
girl when she came with her parents to this locality… after their marriage, [they] settled in Euclid and lived there until about 1831, when they removed to Rockport Township and resided there several years, and then located in Middleburg township, where Mr. [William] Gray operated a sawmill till the most valuable timber was nearly exhausted. Selling out, he moved to Berea, where he passed the remainder of his days. His wife died in Rockport Township. They had nine children who grew up to years of maturity; two died when young.

John Gray of Cuyahoga County, Ohio
