Original burial site of celebrated 19th Century entrepreneur Alexander T. Stewart, whose dry goods empire made him the third wealthiest man in America at the time of his death. In 1878 his body was stolen from its resting place here at St. Mark's and held for $20,000 ransom. After Stewart's widow, Cornelia, complied with the thieves' demands, she had the recovered remains entombed in a new family vault in the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, Long Island, although a positive identification was never made.
