Capt Clyde James Van Arsdall III
September 29, 1941 - December 30, 2015
CAPT Clyde James Van Arsdall III (retired), died in peace at home with his family the evening of 30 December 2015 in Coronado, CA, at 74 from an aggressive form of esophageal cancer.
He was a 1963 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and subsequently completed nuclear power school. During his 30-year Navy career, he served in the surface fleet aboard the nuclear-powered guided missile cruisers USS Bainbridge (CGN-25) and USS Long Beach (CGN-9), and commanded the Knox-class frigate USS Lang (FF-1060) and the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser USS Truxtun (CGN-35). He served as Deputy President of the U.S. Naval War College and as Commander of the NROTC unit at George Washington University.
After retiring from the Navy in 1993, Clyde worked at DOE's Pantex Plant in Amarillo, TX, for twelve years before retiring yet again in 2005, this time to Coronado, CA. His wife, nee Sybil Mainhart, preceded him in death in 2008. He is survived by son, Clyde IV, his wife Ruth and their children, Charlie, Josie, and Sasha, all of San Diego; his son Michael, wife Lilie and their children Elizabeth and William, all of Washington DC; a sister, Anne, and brother, Bob, both of Chapel Hill, NC; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
His military funeral with full honors will be at 9:30 a.m. January 22 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, followed by services at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Coronado Island.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in his name to the San Diego Opera, 233 A St., Centre City Building, San Diego 92101, or the MD Anderson Cancer Center, [email protected], or PO Box 301439, Houston, TX 77230.
