Mrs. Janet S. Schmidt, age 82 of Frederick entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 4, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the devoted wife of the late Dr. Robert P. Schmidt for more than fifty years. Born on November 27, 1933 in Rosemont, she was the daughter of the late Paul L. and Julia (Dryden) Stine. Mrs. Schmidt graduated from Brunswick High School in 1951 and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Towson University in Towson, MD. During her studies at Towson, she was very proud to have worked at the Library of Congress. Being the consummate student, Jan earned her Master of Education Degree and her Advanced Certificate in Education from the University of Illinois in Champaign Illinois and continued further graduate work at McDaniel College and Hood College. Mrs. Schmidt taught public school in Maine, Illinois, and Washington County Maryland before settling down to raise her three children in Frederick. She later returned to education and assisted at-risk and special needs children at Monocacy Middle School, West Frederick Middle and Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School, where she took great joy in inspiring positive changes in the students she helped. After retiring in 2009, she continued to be involved in education, volunteering at Brunswick High School and North Frederick Elementary, tutoring children. Civically minded, Jan dedicated much of her time to our community. She founded the Academic Excellence program at Walkersville High School in the mid 1980's, which continues to honor academically gifted students to this day. In 1987, Jan was awarded a PTSA Lifetime Membership at Walkersville High School, and was recognized as Woman of the Year by the Frederick BPW chapter for her work with Open Air Alley. She participated in "Aspire Frederick", a long-range planning process for the City of Frederick, identifying the vision the community would like to see in the city for the next ten to thirty years. Jan also spent more than twenty-five years as a very involved volunteer for University of Maryland Cooperative Extension, serving at the local level as treasurer for more than fifteen years, as well as at the state and national level where she lobbied for their extensive budget. She was a member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, with nearly 4, 000 hours of service and donated more than thirty gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. She was an active member of the Frederick Woman's Civic Club, a life member of the Maryland Chapter of the 4-H All Stars, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Plymouth Chapter 41. Mrs. Schmidt also completed the Frederick County Sheriff's Citizen Police Academy as well as the Frederick Citizen Police Academy. Jan regularly served as a judge at the Great Frederick Fair, the Montgomery County Fair and Brunswick Community Show. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, belonging to several knitting groups, and frequently donated hats and sweaters to the neo-natal unit at FMH. She was an avid reader and belonged to several book clubs and was also a patron of the arts at several local theaters. Mrs. Schmidt was the dedicated mother of Mark Robert Schmidt and his wife Kim of Tucson, AZ, Eric Robert Schmidt and his wife Amanda of Frederick, Katrina Janet Graham of Jefferson, and her "Illinois daughter" Cindy Sampson of Champaign, IL; and the grandmother of Erika L. Schmidt, Robert "Max" Schmidt and Corey "CT" Graham. She is also survived by her sister Alice Jean Stine of Knoxville. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Schmidt is also predeceased by her brother Paul L. Stine, Jr. Friends will be received on Friday, January 8, 2016 from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 PM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E.
