Bill was born in 1936 to Elbert and Helen Hawley in Wendell, Idaho. He passed away December 15, 2015, in Spokane. He was a proud veteran of the US Army from 1959-1989, retiring as a Colonel. After meeting Carolyn on a blind date, they married and raised three children in the Spokane Valley.
Bill began his teaching career in 1962 in the West Valley School District where he taught math and science and was a counselor. He coached baseball, as well as junior high, high school, and AAU basketball. Bill spent his entire career in the district retiring as the principal of West Valley High School in 1993. He then worked as an adjunct professor at EWU supervising student teachers.
After retirement, Bill and Carolyn cruised the world together. He enjoyed golf, sporting events,"2-hour projects," and is a member of the Softball Hall of Fame. He and Carolyn spent considerable time supporting the grandchildren in their various activities.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Merrill. He is survived by the love of his life of 51 years, Carolyn; as well as his three children: daughter Kristi (Jeff) Dobson; sons Doug (Deanna) and Chad (Gina); and his grandchildren: Emily, Madison, Mackenzie, Scott, Cole, Sophie and Aimee. He is also survived by his brother Jim (Judy) of Ellensburg and his nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on December 29, 2015, at 10:00 am in the West Valley High School theater.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to those who cared for him, especially the staff on 6 South at SHMC, the staff at Valley Good Samaritan, and Dr. Waggoner and Dr. Lessmeier.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either a scholarship fund at West Valley or to Valley Good Samaritan Care Center.
