MARGARET POWELL HENDON 1807-1864
____________________________________________________________

Margaret Powell was likely named for her maternal grandmother, Margaret Akridge. She married Elisha S. Hendon about 1825. They lived in Dekalb and Walton Co.s, GA before removing to Cane Creek, Walker Co., GA in the early 1840's. Margaret Hendon died 1864 and Elisha Hendon remarried to a widow, Elizabeth Hall Rutledge, about 1865. Elisha Hendon died 1868. Margaret is buried next to her husband and granddaughter, Ann Judy Hendon, in unmarked graves in Duncan Cemetery.

Margaret Powell Hendon was the daughter of William Powell, Sr. of Clarke and Fayette Co.s, GA. He was born Brunswick Co., VA before removing to Chatham Co., NC with his father's family. William Powell and two brothers, Seymore Powell and Charles Powell, Jr. removed to Clarke Co., GA about 1802-3. This is where Margaret Powell Hendon was born in 1807.

Margaret's parents were married 1806 in Clarke Co., GA. Clarissa Akridge was William Powell's second wife. She was born 1783 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina and was only four years old when her father died. After Clarissa's mother died, about 1803, she moved to Clarke Co., GA with her brother to join others of her family that had removed to that locale. This is where she met William Powell.

The Powells and Hendons intermarried on several instances in Georgia. Margaret Powell Hendon's cousin, Louisa Powell, dau. of Seymore Powell, mar. William F. Hendon, who was Elisha S. Hendon's kin.

Margaret Powell Hendon's family ties to her father William Powell, Sr. were established by references in several letters written in the early 1870's by her nephew, Rev. Thomas William Powell. In one letter he clearly refers to her children as his cousins.

In a letter of 13 Oct 1870, Rev. Powell mentions the departure of Mary Hendon Powell, widow of A.R. Powell, her brother James A. Hendon and a family friend, Rev. John Young, from Walker Co., Ga. to Arkansas:

"Our beloved Bro. Young has started to the far off West last Tuesday and while many others feel the heavy stroke, I realize it double severe, as I have not only lost in his removal all that others have but, in addition to the loss of him as a Pastor and Counselor, I have lost the company and association of two cousins who have gone to share with him the hardships of the long wearisome road."

The two cousins were James A. Hendon (1843-1902) and his sister, Mary Ann Hendon Powell (1836-1929), both children of Elisha Hendon and Margaret Powell Hendon. See family links below.

Rev. John Young was not a family member but had been instrumental as a mentor of Rev. Thomas Wm Powell, having served as presbytery in his ordination in the Spring of 1870.

And in another letter dated 22 Sept 1870, Rev. Powell refers to the daughter of Lawson M. Hendon as his cousin. Lawson M. Hendon (1826-1909), see family links below, was a son of Elisha Hendon and Margaret Powell Hendon:

Cane Creek
Walker Co., GA

Sept. 20, 1870

"Though my pen almost refuses to write, yet my sorrowing mind and wounded, bleeding heart coerces it as a means of momentary relief, to chronicle the death of an affectionate & much loved Cousin. A brilliant & promising heroine of beauty, intelligence & Christianity, Miss Ann Judson Hendon, about 17 years old, died at about 11 o'clock on the 2nd Sabbath of this inst.

Thusly, was the rising star of life obscured & the opening flower cut down. But the flickering meteor has only gone down to rise a bright orb in heaven's skies and the flower cut to blossom again in the garden of God's heaven."

"Thou art gone, Dear Cousin, gone forever,
From the scenes of this earth and time,
Thou will return no more, no, never
But gaze on scenes more sublime."

Margaret Powell Hendon was born 1807 in Clarke Co., GA and moved to Cane Creek, Walker Co., GA in the early 1840's after living in Fayette, Dekalb and Walton Counties. Her father, William Powell, Sr., lived in Fayette Co., GA. Rev. Powell's father was William Powell, Jr., Margaret Powell's brother. Wm Powell, Jr. died in the 1840's in Heard Co., GA. Margaret Powell died 1864 in Walker Co., GA.

Note to the reader: A.R. Powell mentioned above was Adolphous Reeves Powell, son of Dr. Benjamin Mercer Powell of Cane Creek, Walker Co., GA.

As the letters of Rev. Thomas Wm Powell indicate, A.R. Powell married his cousin, Mary Ann Hendon. Some have speculated that Rev. Powell and A.R. Powell were related but this has been disproved by DNA.

Descendants of Rev. T.W. Powell are Haplogroup I1 and descendants of A.R. Powell are Haplogroup R1b1a2. Therefore, they are not related by blood.

As well, Dr. Benjamin Mercer Powell, was the son of Moses Powell, Jr., R.S., of Wake Co., NC and Jasper Co., GA. This family is well documented and does not include Rev. Thomas William Powell.
