Obituary for Ethel Maye Russell
Ethel Maye Russell, 98, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, January 4, 2016, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella. She was born May 31, 1917, in Tracy, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Kathryn Blakley McCrillis. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School. On January 10, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ervin Russell at Kansas City, Missouri. Following their marriage, the two of them owned and operated an ice cream shop in Knoxville. Ervin died on May 30, 1972. Following Ervin’s death, Ethel went to work at William Penn College in Oskaloosa. She worked there in food service for over 25 years. She enjoyed traveling with Ervin, some of their favorite destinations where to horse racing tracks around the country. She always looked forward to getting together with her family. She especially enjoyed being at the family cabin for special events.

Her family includes a nephew, Glen Van Roekel; her great nieces and nephew, Wendy (Rob) Sims of Pella, Becky (Jeff) Maak of Altoona, Vicki (Cory) Self of Harvey, and Gregg (Tanya) Van Roekel of Altoona; great great nephews, Ryan (Shannon) Sims, Cory (Dana) Sims, Megan Sims, Travis Maak, Cara Maak, Sydney Swanson, Tori Swanson, Cole Swanson, Lain Self, Jenna Van Roekel, Garrett Van Roekel, Charlotte Van Roekel; great great great niece, Gracen Sims; two cousins, Gordon (Lynda) Anderson of Oskaloosa; Janet (David) Fleck of White Fish Bay, Wisconsin; second cousins, Kimberly (Kevin) Lowry, Traci Overbergen all of Oskaloosa, Stewart (Martha) Fleck and Jennifer Fleck all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In addition to her husband, Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Eva (Bill) Grootveldt; and a niece, Carole Van Roekel.

As was Ethel’s wish her body has been cremated. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Private burial of her urn will be in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Pella Hospice Comfort House.
