Mr. J. Oscar Agner was a native of Taylor County and when he married Miss Sarah Townsend, they settled on a good farm in the "Flat Creek" area. He and his first wife Sara, were the parents of four daughters and one son: Missouri (Kelly), Sevier, Elmire (Odum), Berta (Shelfer), and Laura (Felder). He lived about three miles east of Boyd, and he was a member of the New Life Methodist Church. It was said that one could "set his watch" when Oscar Agner, Bill Hendry and Bert Fife arrived concurrently for Saturday services at the church. They would be there at the scheduled hour. After the death of his first wife, he married Mrs. Chaffa Cruce Murphy. They were the parents of three sons, Royce, Martin, and Dexel, and one daughter, Doris (Mrs. C. A. Lewis). - They Were Here Issue #1, published by Taylor County Historical Society
