In particular, there is regretfully, no currently known connection with Peter & Mary (Josselyn) Gates of High Easter, Essex, parents of a Thomas Gates who married at a similar time, and died in the same year as the son of Eustace. That Thomas is cited as the father of George Gates (1634-1724), early settler of Hartford, Haddam, and East Haddam, Connecticut. This is notably described in "Records of the Gates families of America", pub. 1997, by Robert Cady Gates, agreeing with this conclusion, reported 4 Apr 2008, on genealogy.com. References to more recent or more accurate research is always welcome.

Of particular note, there is no record of his parentage. It should also be noted that his son Thomas married a Mary Mylnye in Hingham, Norfolk, while the son of Peter Gates married an Elizabeth Weeden in Norwich. Contrast both of these with Thomas Gates of Jamestown, Virginia (1582-1660), early Governor or colony leader of Virginia, also founder of Gates Fort on Saint George's Island, Bermuda. See also in Wikitree.

An SNP Y-DNA test can be used to determine relation to descendants of his grandchildren, those of at least two sons of his son Stephen. FamilyTreeDNA currently has a Gates surname group, with test results non-projected (actual) Y-DNA haplogroup and and additional details, preemptively available in their public access section.
