Sara was born to Hiram and Anna Lockard Moore. She studied music and was a graduate of Colorado Women's College. She married Ernest Clyde Gates on May 1, 1912, in Florence Colorado. Their only child, Charles, was born in 1916. The family moved to Casper about 1920 for Clyde to work for Standard Oil Co.
Sara was well known in the city of Casper for her vocal talent and sang for many local events, was a charter member of the Treble Clef (Womens) Choir and sang frequently with her sister Mary Sundwell. The oldest sister was Leola Moore Johnson. Sara and her family were members of the Christian Science Church in Casper.
