DECATUR, Ga. — Cooperative Baptist Fellowship leader and former CBF Moderator Donna Forrester died December 31 at the age of 66 after a 14-year battle with brain cancer. Forrester served as moderator in 2000-2001 and was the first ordained woman to hold the position.

As the child of a pastor, the South Carolina native was a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. (Master of Divinity) and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. (Doctor of Ministry). Forrester served as Minister of Pastoral Care and Counseling at First Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C. from August 1989 to November 2006. She served as a member of the CBF Coordinating Council from 1996-2002.

Born in Johnston, SC, Dr. Forrester was the daughter of the late Rev. Vello and Nancy Forrester. She earned a Master of Divinity at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and a Doctor of Ministries at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. Dr. Forrester served on the Pastoral Staff at First Baptist Church Greenville for approximately 20 years. During her time at First Baptist Greenville she wrote several hymns that have since been published, and from 2000 to 2001 served as the National Moderator for Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.


She is survived by her husband, Jerry Kerns; 3 step-children, Josh Kerns (Kim), Zach Kerns (Lauren) and Kristen Tice (Colin); 2 brothers, Philip Perry Forrester of Simpsonville, SC and Vello M. Forrester, Jr. (Linda) of Camden, SC; 7 nieces and nephews, Heather Wells, Dawn Fussell, Stacie Kent, Kristen Barbour, Philip Perry Forrester, Jr., Vello M. Forrester, III, and Dylan Forrester; 4 grandchildren and 13 great nieces.
