Arthur C. Allen was a native of New Jersey. He received his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco in 1936 and trained in pathology at several institutions, including the Cook County Hospital in Chicago under Otto Saphir, the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, and New York's Mount Sinai Hospital under Paul Klemperer. From 1938 until 1941 he worked at the New York Postgraduate Hospital, then a part of the Columbia University establishment but now absorbed by New York University. Allen joined the army in 1942 and spent the war years at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. He and his wife, Sophie Spitz Allen, jointly published an article on rickettsial diseases in 1945, the year when he joined the staff of Memorial Hospital in New York. In 1957, after his wife's death, he joined the faculty of the University of Miami, and stayed for four years. He returned to New York in 1961 to assume the position of Director of Laboratories at Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, where he remained until his death in 1994.
