Louise Law Hartman, 84, of near Moorefield, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 21, 1931, in Bedford, Ky., to William Albert and Bessie Miles Law. She was raised in Trimble County, Ky. and Jefferson County and was a 1950 graduate of Central High School. She was employed with the U.S. Shoe Factory in Madison and at the Five & Dime Store in Madison for one year. In 1974, she was employed as a teacher’s aide at Jeff-Craig Elementary School. She was also a bus driver for the feeder route. She retired as an instructional assistant from the Switzerland County School Corporation in 2013 after 39 years of service. She helped her husband on the family farm raising cattle, tobacco, corn, wheat, soybeans and hay. The Hartman Family have continually operated the Hartman Farm near Moorefield for the past 112 years. The family received the Homestead Award from Governor Joseph Kernan in 2004 for continuous operation of a family farm for 100 years in the State of Indiana. She was a member of the Evening Bells Home Economics Club and Caledonia United Presbyterian Church in Moorefield. She was a 4-H leader in Switzerland County for several years. She enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, mowing the lawn and caring for her home and the barnyard.

She is survived by one daughter, Vicki Lee Hartman Bear of Moorefield; one son, Chris Hartman of Madison; four sisters, Mary Bullock of Madison, Pauline Roberts of Muncie, and Edna Murphy and Emogene Konkle, both of Madison; one brother, William “Billy” Law Jr. of Madison; three grandsons; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian L. “Nub” Hartman, whom she married March 13, 1952, and who died July 25, 2011; her parents; and two brothers, infant William Miles and Frank “Bud” Law, who died in 1997.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Elbert Lynn Bear Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation of Switzerland County or to Moorefield Fire Department. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
