Joseph Pleasant was born in Franklin, Louisiana 1 May 1875 as the son of the white farmer Frank Thomas and the black woman Silvia Pleasant. He married Sarah Taliaferro around 1901 and had eight children (two were step-children): Randy, Emma, Henry, Beatrice, Adeline, Etta, Joe and James. Joe Thomas died in Louisiana 14 December 1986, aged 111 years and 227 days. He was the oldest living man in the world when he died.
