William H. Thomas
William Henry Thomas, son of Harrison Horace and Eva Wilson Thomas, was born on Nov. 15, 1991, at Burlington, Iowa, and departed this life on April 24, 1962, at the age of 70 years, 5 months, and 9 days.

When he was a small child he moved with his parents to Lamoni, Iowa, where he spent much of his boyhood and attended schools in that area. At about the age of 17, he moved with his mother back to Burlington where he attended Elliott's Business college for a time.

He worked for a while at Fairfield, Iowa, and then served with the Burlington Railroad for four years. During most of the remainder of his life he was engaged in farming, first in western Illinois, in Hancock county, and later in Iowa in Lee county and Decatur county.

On June 23, 1914, he was united in marriage with May V. Stevenson of Ferris, Ill. To this union, four children were born: Ada May, William Henry, Elbert Rollett, and Mildred Louise.

Early in life, he espoused the cause of Jesus Christ, having been baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at the age of eight years. He served his God and his fellowmen in the ordained office of teacher and elder successively. At one time the served as pastor of the Evergreen congregation near Lamoni, and was a counselor to the pastor there for many years.

He was a diligent student of many good books, especially the scriptural records. The teachings of the Master of Men were his guideposts. His faith was one not only of words but deeds also.

Through all the misfortunes which the family met, he was able to rise to the occasion with a calm attitude and met the problems as simply and effectively as possible. He was an earnest supporter of education and received much satisfaction in the progress of his family in a scholastic way. He recognized the need for community service and served in various capacities in that respect.

"Pop," as he was known to his family and friends of the community, was a strict yet loving father, a faithful, loving husband, and a helpful neighbor.

During March 1941, the family moved to a farm in the Evergreen community near Lamoni. He remained active in his farm operations until April 13, 1962, when he entered the Independence Sanitarium and hospital for medical care and diagnosis. He underwent surgery on April 23 from which he never recovered and quietly went to his Creator on April 24, at 6:05 in the evening.

He was preceded in death by both his parents.

He is survived by his companion of the home; four children, Mrs. Paul Griffith of near Lamoni; William Thomas of Lenox, Iowa, Elbert Thomas of near Lamoni, and Mrs. Wayne Blevins of Rich Hill, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Lamoni RLDS church. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
