Barbara, of East Lansing, MI, began the next stage of her life's journey on January 1, 2016. She was born to Fred and Juliet Allyn.

After moving to Lansing, MI she graduated from Walter French Junior High and Eastern High School. She attended Michigan State University, where she met Bruce Benson; they were married for 17 years.

Barbara worked at MSU in the Crop and Soil Science Department, the College of Arts and Letters and retired from the Asian Studies Center.

It was also at MSU that Barbara met her second husband, Robert Marty. He predeceased her.

Barbara loved many things. Her life's passion, however, was needlework. She was the proud co-owner of the Thimbleberry Shop, a store specializing in needlepoint in East Lansing. Barbara was also an expert knitter and a meticulous embroiderer. Her friends and family were the grateful recipients of her prodigious output in both these areas. Barbara was a member of Martin Luther Chapel of East Lansing, MI.

She is survived by her sister, Bette Jylha; her two daughters, Kelley Benson and Krista Haven (John); her beloved granddaughter, Katharine Buckland and her nephew, Eric Jylha.

Cremation has taken place according to her wishes.

Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, where she received outstanding care during the final months of her life.
