He was born on December 21, 1930, in Frankfort, the son of the late Peter and Matia Sorentino Acquaviva and was educated in Frankfort schools. Sal was married to Carol A. Utter on July 29, 1972 in St. Mary´s Church, Cooperstown. He was employed as a machinist with the Remington Arms, Ilion, until retirement in 1990. Sal at one time was employed with Chicago Pneumatic, Univac, Pin-O-Rama Lanes and Sundstrand in Denver.

Sal was a communicate of Our Lady Queen Of Apostles Church and a member of the American Legion Post #845. He served in the United States Army in Germany during the Korean War and in the United States Air Force in the Philippines from 1957 to 1960. He was an avid fan of the Yankees, Notre Dame Football and Penn State Football.

Sal had a competitive spirit for bowling throughout his life. He became involved in bowling at an early age when he started as a pinboy at State Bowling Center, Ilion. He followed the sport through his years in the armed forces where he won the All Events for the Air Force in 1959. Sal also excelled in many tournaments, bowling on television in the Utica Club Statewide Tournament in 1961 and 1962, winning the first week of the tournament. He won the Team Event in the New York State Tournament in 1962, bowling for the Ilion Elks Club. In 1962, he won the Scratch Doubles in the Schenectady Press Tournament.

Sal's many other accomplishments include bowling on television in 1985 fininshing third in the Syracuse King of the Hill; winning three Gold and two Silver medals in the 1988 Empire State Games Sr. Division, and winning the Utica Bowling Association's Sr. Bowler of the Year in 1987, 1995 and 1999. Sal was inducted into the Utica Bowling Hall of Fame in 1986. He was always willing to give advice and help others. In 1982, with his wife Carol, they started the first Junior bowling program at Thurston Lanes, Frankfort. He coached the juniors until 1986 when he opened his own bowling pro shop and continued to share his knowledge of the sport with everyone. In 1994 he bowled his first 300 game at the age of 63 after recoving from triple-bypass heart surgery years prior. He had a career-high average of 229 in 1995 and his first 800 series, 800, at the age of 65. In Sal's list of accomplishments, he has four 300 games, two 800 series, with an 807as his high, several 11 in-a-row awards and numerous 700 series. Most recently after recovering from a total knee replacement, his team finished first in the NYS Mixed Doubles Tournament in Syracuse in November.
