Sam, born in Greenville, SC on November 13, 1918 to Jackson Darby Hunt and Mary (Mace) Hunt, graduated from Clemson University in 1940 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he worked for GE until he was called into the Army serving as an officer in ordinance. In his early years, he developed the love for amateur radio and received his radio license at 15 years of age, which he continued to enjoy until his death. His call letters were W8AAI and K4LE. In his lifetime, he worked over 310 countries and helped connect families during times of crisis, as well as doctors on medical missions.
After WWII, Sam joined the Square D Company in Detroit, MI, spending his formidable career in the electrical engineering industry, retiring in 1984 as Vice President of Marketing.
Sam's love of amateur radio was only eclipsed by his love of golfing, at which he was able to shoot under his age many times, scoring 5 hole-in-ones, played 14 years at the Walt Disney Pro-AM, as well as being chosen as a member of the US Senior Golfing Team, Sports for Understanding, which played 26 matches in Australia in 1990.
Sam was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Gladys Bridges Hunt and his brother, Charles Darby Hunt, both of Greenville. He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne Hunt Hopkins of Marietta, GA, his 3 grandchildren, Richard Hunt Hodgetts, Anne Holland Rowland and Darby Hodgetts Valego; his 5 great grandchildren, his sister-in-law Jewell Barton Hunt and his cousin Bill (Peggy) Hunt. He leaves behind the memory of a "gentleman" with a beautiful smile and a true twinkle in his eye!
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Oct. 3, 2015 at the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, SC.
