He was born in Salt Lake City on January 4, 1920 to his parents, Estella and Arthur Frances Coombs. Arthur, upon Melvin's birth, announced him as a "howling success."
Melvin's mother passed away when he was six years old and so he was raised by his three loving older sisters and his many cousins, aunts, and uncles. After finishing high school, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Spanish American Mission.
With the outbreak of the WWII, Melvin enlisted in the army of the United States, serving in the rank of Second Lieutenant. He served one year in the Aleutian Islands. While on leave, he married Catherine Margaret Wallace in the Salt Lake Temple.
At that point, he was assigned to the 87th Infantry Division who fought across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and as a front line Company Commander lead his men in the breakthrough of the Siegfried Line and on to the Rhine River.
Returning home to Salt Lake City, he and his wife, Catherine Margaret, raised five children. Melvin graduated from the University of Utah and was employed by the Utah National Guard.
In 1960, Melvin moved his family to San Diego California, where he worked at the Naval Electronics Laboratory. After retirement, Melvin served six years as a volunteer assistant to the LDS church's contractor during the building of the San Diego Temple.
He is survived by his children, Micheal, Melvin (Rusty), Mark, Mary (Nettleton), and Margaret Coombs.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
