Leslie F. Christensen, 92, of East Hartford, beloved husband of the late Ruth "Billie" (Kelly) Christensen, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 5. He was born January 13, 1920 in Hartford to the late Samuel and Annie (Smith) Christensen. Les had grown up in Windsor and moved to East Hartford with his wife in 1950. He served his country honorably in the 414F-104th "Timberwolves" Infantry Division during World War II in the U.S. Army and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in action. Along with his friend and partner Hal Davey, he founded Optical Style Bar in Manchester and was a member of the Opticians Association. He was also a member of the American Legion Gray Dickinson-Post 0059 in Windsor, the VFW in Windsor Locks, and the Manchester Mercantile Bowling League. He is survived by his daughters, Maryann "Bibsy" Larson and Peter, his much loved son in law of East Hartford; Leslie "Bobbi" Christensen of Brooksville, FL; his brother, Burton Christensen of Manchester; four grandchildren, Christopher Larson and his wife Sandra of Coventry; Kathryn and her husband Arnie Bontrager of Glendale, AZ; Michael Oken and his wife Ann Margaret of West Hartford; Jeffrey Oken and his wife Cathie of Simsbury; as well as seven great grandchildren, Tori, Dylan, Joshua, Andrew, Mikayla, Lauren and Olivia. In addition to his wife and parents, Les was predeceased by his brothers, John, Harold and Leonard. He also leaves his dear friend and companion, Alicia Melvin and her loving family. Most of all; he will be remembered as a kind, good natured and loving husband and father and of course, a passionate golfer.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 1 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. His family will receive friends on Monday, April 9, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations in Les's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, CT Chapter, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Suite 100, Rocky Hill CT 06067.
