Col. Raymond C. Bishop (Ret.), loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away unexpectedly at his home in Jackson, Wyoming on December 12, 2015.

Ray is survived by his wife Debbie, his children Brian (Kristina), Abbey (Mike) Donley, Clark (Christine), and grandchildren Megan Bishop, Elise Bishop, and William Donley, as well as his sister Helen (Fred) Thompson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins he adored. A memorial service was held at St John's Episcopal Church in Jackson, WY on December 21, 2015, and funeral services were held in Douglas, WY at Christ Episcopal Church on Monday, December 28, 2015. The internment services, with full military honors, followed at the Bishop family cemetery in Douglas, WY. The U.S. flag was presented to his widow, Debbie Bishop.

Ray grew up in a military family, and while living in Hawaii he attended Punahou. While living in Utah, Ray attended Wahlquist Junior High School, and went on to graduate from Rapid City High School. Ray graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology and received his commission through the Air Force ROTC program in June 1970. He entered active duty at Williams AFB in Arizona. While playing soccer in Arizona one day, Ray met a beautiful woman who was attending Arizona State University, and Debbie soon became his wife for almost 44 years.

Ray served over 25 years in the Air Force, in numerous capacities. He had two tours in Vietnam, and over 600 hours of flying time in the C-7A and the B-52G aircraft, and over 4100 hours of flying time. He served in many capacities, with highlights as a T-38 instructor and training program developer, and while at the Pentagon, Ray served as the Strategic Liaison under Ronald Reagan. Ray was a B-52 pilot, and served as the 325th Bombardment (Heavy), Squadron Commander at Fairchild AFB Washington. His unit received seven out of a possible eight Strategic Air Command Bombing and Navigation Competition trophies, to include the Fairchild Trophy. As Deputy Commander of Operations, his unit received the Strategic Air Command for the best conventional bomber unit.

Ray also served as the Operations Commander at Anderson AFB Guam. Ray's Wing was chosen to participate in the Gulf War campaign "Desert Storm", in the two minute bombing intervals of Iraq. Ray was the Strategic Air Command Chair at the Air War College in Alabama, and he was the Wing (Base) Commander at Castle AFB in California. Ray received many awards and medals during his years of service, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

While Ray was stationed all over the world serving our "Grand Old Flag," with his wife and children always by his side, he still found time to get his Master's in Business from Webster College in Missouri. He also completed coursework for his doctorate.

After retirement Ray became the Director of Airports for Kern County, CA where his passion, vision, and coalition building allowed him to successfully build the William H. Thomas terminal building, among other impressive feats. Ray left Kern County to return to his Wyoming roots and accepted the position as the Airport Director in Jackson Hole, WY. Ray again succeeded in the position by building alliances among stakeholders with competing interests to improve runway safety. He built a beautiful terminal building that allowed the community to showcase the grandeur of Jackson while better serving passengers' needs, all while making minimal impacts to the environment. After retiring in 2014 Ray dedicated himself to the sport of triathlon and placed fifth in his age group at National Championships in August 2015, qualifying him for Triathlon World Championships in Mexico this coming September.

Col. Raymond Corbett Bishop (Ret) was an honorable man, ethical, and always true to his word. He was a motivator, who was always planning the next adventure. He saw the best in everyone, and always pushed those he knew to do more than they thought they could. Ray made new friends wherever he went, and anyone who knew him could feel his joy and excitement for life. Ray's greatest accomplishment was his family, and his love will live on through all of us.

Raymond Corbett Bishop was our hero, our mentor, our father, our best friend. He will be forever loved and forever missed.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you hold your family close. If you are able, Ray would be honored if you would ski, swim, bike, run or enjoy some physical activity with your family in his memory. You are more capable, than you know.
