By 1851 he should have been taxable for a poll tax, but no record of this was found in Guadalupe County; however, in 1855 he paid the poll tax in Comal County.

On April 22, 1855, he was married in Comal County to Heinricke Haag, by Herman Seale, Justice of the Peace. She was born in Wurtemberg, according to the 1860 census and undoubtedly belonged to one of the several Haag families from the same place who where also in Comal County in 1860.

Rudolph was listed in the household following his parents in 1860:
#524/501 Rudolph Schmidt, age 29 Farmer
Heinrike " age 24
Ida " age 4
Robert " age 2
Richard " age 1

The three children were all born in Texas. Rudolph owned $500 in real estate and had $1265 in personal estate, most of which was probably eight horses and 39 cows that he was taxed for that year.

Rudolph was naturalized in Comal County as a citizen of the Confederate States of America on August 6, 1864, on the affidavit of Georg Beringer and Wm. Gerhard, who said they had known him for five years past. Rudolph said he had been under 18 years of age when he arrived in the United States at Galveston, that he was now over 21 years of age, that he abjured allegiance to every foreign prince, "particularly to the prince of Schwarzburg-Rutolstadt."

In 1869, in spite of the civil war, Rudolph's herd had grown to 20 horses and 38 cows.

In 1870 his family was still listed adjoining his father on the census (#668/668 Comal County, Texas), and in 1880 several of the children were living with their aunt and uncle Schuchardt in Guadalupe County, Texas. No record of Rudolph or his wife was found in 1880.

A brand was registered to Rudolph Schmidt who resided in Guadalupe County, Texas, on September 15, 1887; however, it is not known whether this was Rudolph Sr. or his son. The record is on page 175, Guadalupe County, Texas.

On August 6, 1889, Rudolph Schmidt sold his land in Comal County, Texas, to Charles Lachtleben (Comal County Deed Book U-29-31). This was the last record found on him and the date and place of his death and that of his wife is unknown.
