Lester was born in rural Van Meter to Carl and Doris (Stump) Marquardt on September 8, 1926. He attended Van Meter Community School where he graduated in 1945. His marriage to Mary Lou Spencer took place on August 14, 1948 in Waukee at the United Methodist Church. After his marriage he served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Lester was a farmer all of his life along with his wife of 57 years. He loved his grandchildren, daughter, and wife. Lester cherished his family and friends. He was a good man who enjoyed his farm animals, pets and horseracing. He also loved Country and Bluegrass Music.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou of rural Van Meter; a daughter, Rita Huntrods and husband, Don of rural Van Meter; 2 brothers, Gordon Marquardt and wife, Eleanor of Adel; Otis Marquardt and wife, Verla of Texas and 2 granddaughters, Jennie and Amanda Huntrods of rural Van Meter.
