His father was Harry W. Redies (born Nebraska of German born Fred W. Redies and Nebraska born Minnie Freude); his mother was Helen Hilke Wolthoff (aka Walthoff, born Minnesota of Dutch parents George Wolthoff and Hilke Mennenger).

His uncles were Archie (Ontje) Walthoff (1892-1964); Beke Wolthoff (1895-1967); George Walthoff (1904-2001) his mother's twin; and Hiram Wolthoff (1911). His aunts were Ella [Wolthoff] Thompson (1896-1966), Byky (1901) and Christine [Wolthoff] Miller (1907-1990).

The Redies family farmed land south of Colome, South Dakota, near its border with Nebraska. Harry was first enrolled in Nixon elementary school under his middle name, Frederick. His sister is Mrs. Phyllis Forgey (1926).

Harry F. shares a grave and headstone with his wife, Marjorie who passed in 2007.
