Billy Eugene Kent, 89, of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away peacefully at UNC Hospital on Friday, January 1, 2016 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Bill was born on Jan. 21, 1926 in Piedmont, Kansas to Everett Peter Kent and Annabell Scott Kent. In 1944 Bill joined the United States Army Air Force and in 1945 he was stationed in Ridgewell, England as a relief Top Gunner/Flight Engineer on board many different B-17. He served many missions there over Germany. Bill was then transferred to Iceland at the end of WWII for the demilitarization of aircraft where he remained until his discharge in 1946. Upon his return home he married his beloved sweetheart Marguerite and in 1953 they moved to Raleigh, NC where he began his work with Exide Battery. In 1963 he left Exide to work for North Carolina State University as an accountant.

Bill retired from the University as Head of contracts and grants in 1985.

Bill loved NC State and was a long time basketball and football season ticket holder. He and Marguerite attended many games and tailgated with the Mussers, Wilsons and Peedins at Carter Finley Stadium. Bill was also an avid baseball fan and enjoyed visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Bill always had a smile on his face and his big bear hugs always made you feel very loved and welcomed.

Bill was proceeded in death by Marguerite Kent his wife of 67 years, his step brother Raymond E Kent, his half brother Russell L Dougherty and his half sister Ethel Lorene Dougherty. He is survived by his son, Billy E. Kent Jr, of Youngsville, NC and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 12, at 2:00 with visitation at 1:00 prior to the service at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC.
