Duke of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg. Son of Friedrich II and Luise Dorothea von Sachsen-Meingingen.
He had the first English garden build on the continent, brought natural scientists to his court, promoted the theater and libraries. In 1774 he became a freemason and rose to become Grand Master. He joined the Illuminati in 1784, under the alias name "Quintus Severus". When the order was banned in Bavaria in 1785, and the pope declared the covenant incompatible with the Catholic faith, Ernst II offered the founder Adam Weisshaupt asylum in Gotha. Following his wish, he was buried in a pit on the island, which was only lined out with grass. There was no crypt, coffin or gravestone.
